Vacation At Last

By Billy W 3 August 2009 17 Comments

At long last, I’m finished with working for a big Japanese company. Well, for now anyway. After work on my final day last Wednesday, my co-workers and bosses took me out for tantanmen at a renowned Chinese restaurant in Tokorozawa. I’ll be writing that place up in the near future since it has surpassed Kohmen as my all-time favorite tantanmen place in Japan.

Anyway, after saying my goodbyes on the Seibu Shinjuku platform at Tokorozawa station, I boarded the last train back to Shinjuku and took a seat across from a salaryman who apparently was more deserving of a good rest than I was.

Well, kudos to you, Mr. Cool-Biz Salaryman; you are one of the bricks in the working foundation of the mighty country that is Nippon. Banzai! Banzai!

    He would get robbed real quick in America.

    Anyway, I have seen these salarymen types pull some crazy sleeping stunts on the trains. I will never forget the guy I saw passed out on the floor of the train.

    Have a great vacation Billy! Love the pics : ) You certainly caught a classic sleeping on the train moment there.

    Does this mean you’ll be doing more writing these days?

    I think this guy would be left alone in most of Europe, too. (I’m European, incidentally.)
    When I was in Paris, I met a guy from LA. He told me he’d fallen asleep on a bench somewhere. When he woke up the next morning, he got two gynormous surprises:
    1. He was still alive.
    2. He still had all his possessions.

    @Rrabano:
    Definitely can’t do it in my hometown :o

    @freedom:
    Yeah, I’ve seen some pretty weird ones, but not when I had my Nikon with me ;)

    @Chris:
    Thank you. I’m enjoying fucking off immensely.

    @Honor:
    I will try to do some more writing (not that I’m any good at it, but…) when I can. Thanks for the encouragement!

    @Billy:
    Thanks, Billy. You have a cool name, sir.

    @zeptimius:
    Yeah, usually if you fall asleep on a bench somewhere in LA, you wake up in a tub of ice in an abandoned house in East LA with a pain in your lower back and a note saying, “Thanks for the kidney…Get medical attention ASAP.” :?

    Dude is definitely “chillin’” :)
    I’m makin my 3rd trip to the City of Sin in October!! You doin’ Vegas in August? 118 degrees on the strip. It’s a dry desert heat that just needs hydration and your good. I didn’t even get as much sun as in Hawaii even though it was beating down pretty hard.

    Vegas is like literally being in an oven set to bake while Japan in August is like sitting in a sauna with a freak who keeps throwing water over the stones.

    I’m all stoked for my Vegas via Hawaii excursion :) Have fun in the “Sin City” The drinks are HUGE and every Hotel’s main Bar has their own famously huge alcohol drink. Start at Mandalay Bay and work your way down the strip until you black-out.

    Thanks, man. I’ll be back in Japan refreshed and hopefully reinvigorated.

    @Chris B:
    October, eh? Perfect timing. I’ll be running for air-conditioned shelter every chance I get.

    お疲れさま!Meant to have a beer with you at least once before I cruised this country, but I guess we’ll have to save that for later down the road. I’m headed home, too, to recharge before I come back and look for work here.

    Thanks. Have a great summer, yourself.

    @The Envoy:
    Yeah, either way, he looked to be sleeping more deeply than I’m ever able to, even in the comfort of my own home. Envious, for sure.

    @David:
    Yeah, we’ll definitely have that beer next time you’re here. I’ll be back by October or November, myself. Enjoy the recharge.

    Even in sleeping mode, the man seems to be making a call on a cellular. I wonder about what he use to dream.

    He’s probably dreaming about punching out his demanding boss ;)
